Cost, timing and what to ask
The 8 questions that actually decide roof repair, answered with estimated ranges.
Note 01Why does my roof leak sometimes and not others?
Because the opening only takes water under certain rain. A valley or flashing that copes with a shower can overflow in a downpour; a lap on the side facing the weather only lets in rain the wind pushes sideways. Note which rain brings it and which side of the house the wind came from, and the search can start at the right place.
Note 02Why does my roof leak even after the rain stops?
Because water got in during the rain and was stored on the way down: soaked into insulation, running along a rafter, or sitting on a flat section and seeping through a seam. The drip is the store emptying. It still means an opening above, usually some way from the stain, and the attic is the place to start looking.
Note 03What is the average cost to repair a roof in Texas?
No Texas-wide figure turned up in what we checked, so the honest answer uses local and national ones. A La Porte listing puts minor repairs at an estimated $300 to $1,500 and larger ones at $1,500 to $5,000, and national 2026 figures give $300 to $3,000, around $900 on average. Your figure follows what the roof needs once it is seen.
Note 04What is considered a minor roof leak?
A slow drip at one spot, only in heavier rain, with no sag in the ceiling and nothing electrical nearby, is minor. It still needs fixing, but it can wait for a booking. Water in every rain, water that keeps dripping after the rain, or a stain that grows each time is not minor, whatever its size.
Note 05How long can you leave a leaking roof?
A small, steady drip in one spot, caught in a bucket, can usually wait a few days for a proper repair. Water near a light fixture, a ceiling that bulges, or a leak that grows with each rain cannot wait at all. The longer any leak runs, the more decking, insulation and ceiling it takes with it.
Note 06What happens if a roof leak is left untreated?
The wood under the opening stays wet, softens and eventually rots, insulation stops working, and the ceiling stains, then sags. A leak that started as one failed boot becomes a repair to the deck under it, which is why a small leak is cheapest the week it appears.
Note 07Does Texas require roofers to be licensed?
No. Texas issues no state roofing license. A trade association, the Roofing Contractors Association of Texas, offers one of its own, and a La Porte roofer describes holding it as one of the few in the state. Since there is no state number to check, ask any roofer for their business details and a written quote before anything starts.
Note 08What to look for when choosing a roofing contractor?
Someone who asks when the roof leaks before they talk about price, looks before pricing, shows you what failed, and puts the scope and price on a written quote. Texas has no state roofing license, so ask for their business details, and ask your city whether the job needs a permit.
